JOY MODELS

The JOY Pen

This was the name given to a range of pens intended to capture the 'purse pen' side of the market.  Launched in 1926, the  model originally came in six colours: Black, Mottled,Cerise,Jade, Powder Blue and Mauve. It was targetted at the popular 10/6 retail price market.

A popular model line, there followed a number of style options (clipless, ring-top, and clip versions), and an expanded range of colours.

The barrel stamp comes in at least two major variations:

Several models have the JOY written in a style that resembles handwriting, immediately above the Curzon branding. In addition some have the slightly different "JOY CHARMEUSE" (this latter word being the french term for a silk fabric).

Other examples have the name JOY sited tidily between the Summit and the Curzon branding.

Those models with a "J Number" will have it located towards the bottom of the barrel. As I dentify the various sub-models I will detail them below. Additional contributions from other collectors is particularly welcome!

 JOY MODEL  J.4

At 4 1/4", and fitted with a warranted 14ct nib, this came with a matching ring-tp pencil:

JOY MODEL  J.9

There is no significant difference between this and the model J7.C, except that there is no pocket clip on this example. The pencils are of a different design:

JOY MODEL J.14

A real miniture model, this measures only 3 1/2" in length, and is also rather slim.

JOY MODEL J.16

These look like direct copies of the early Conway Stewart Dinkies, and it seems they were made in the same colourways. Neither of these examples have good markings, so there is an element of uncertainty as to whether the J.16 reading is accurate.

JOY MODEL: No Number

Finally, here are four other JOY models that do not appear to carry a "J Number"
